Ancient Greek Sphinx with lion body, eagle wings, and woman’s head from mythology

Can you solve the Sphinx’s ancient riddle?

Maidin mhaith, quizzers! ๐Ÿ‘‹ Today’s challenge is one for the ages: the infamous Riddle of the Sphinx, a puzzle that has tested minds for centuries.

In ancient Greece, a monstrous Sphinx (sfinks) guarded the road to Thebes (THEE-bz). Every traveller had to face her challenge. Fail to answer, and your journey—and your life—would end there. The stakes could not have been higher. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

What was the Sphinx? ๐Ÿพ
A creature of myth and terror. She had the body of a lion, wings of an eagle, and the head of a woman. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿ‘ฉ No simple brute, but an intelligent and ruthless guardian. The word “Sphinx” comes from the Greek sphingein, meaning “to bind”, for she held fate itself in her grasp. ๐Ÿ—️

Then came Oedipus (ed-eh-pus). Sharp-witted and resolute. He listened, reasoned, and answered the impossible riddle. In doing so, he broke the curse, defeated the Sphinx, and forever altered the course of his life.

And now, the riddle stands before you. Can you match wits with legend? Go n-รฉirรญ leat! ๐Ÿ€

Question: "What creature walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?"

Answer: A human.

We crawl as infants (four legs), walk upright in adulthood (two legs), and may rely on a cane in old age (three legs).

Did you know? The phrase “Don’t kill the messenger” is often linked to ancient tales like Oedipus Rex — the renowned tragedy by Sophocles (SOH-fuh-kleez). It follows the later fate of the very Oedipus who solved this riddle. In the story, bearers of grim news suffer blame they do not deserve — a timeless reminder: blame the message, not the messenger. ๐Ÿ“œ
